WILL OF JOHN GREEN 1779 In the name of God Amen I John Green of the County of Chowan in the State of North Carolina Innkeeper, knowing the uncertainty of life, and as touching to the worldly substance wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me. The first of all I give my body to the ground from whence it was taken in sure and certain hopes of the Resurrection of the same, to be decently buried to the discration of my Executors, hereafter mentioned, and my soul to Almighty God. ITEM. I give to my Beloved Son in Law James Luten, my Plantation on the Sound Side with all the stock of Cattle thereon belonging to me, and all the Plantation utentials thereunto belonging,, that is all the land laying or belonging to me on or about the Sound as before mentioned. SECONDLY I give to my Dear and well beloved wife Elizabeth Green, one bed and furniture, and her the liberty to choose the best of all that belongs to me, also half a dozen chairs, 1 sett china and other articles sufficient to furniah a room as shall be adjudged by my Executors likewise potts, plates and other materials for kitchen use, at the discretion of my Executors; I would be understood that I mean the above articles for my wifes use during her natural life, and after her demise to be equally divided between my two daughters Sarah and Anne. Likewise I desire my negros should be hired out, and the money arising from such hire to be applied for the maintainance of my Wife and my Daughter Ann, nevertheless if my Wife chooses to keep the negros beforementioned in preference of them being hired out, I also give her the liberty to employ them in her service during her life and after the decease of my beloved Wife I give and bequeath the said negros to my Daughter Ann excepting my negro Tony I give and bequeath to my Son in law James Luten. THIRDLY I give and bequeath to my dear and well beloved Daughter, Sarah Luten all the houses and lotts back and front, where I now live, and where the said James Luten lives, durng her natural life, but in case the said James Luten should decease before my said Daughter Sarah, then I give and bequeath the said houses and lotts to the heirs lawfully begot of her body by the said James Luten, that is I give and bequeath the said houses and lotts to the heirs of my Daughter Sarah Luten only reserving her life time in the said in case the said James Luten should decease before my Daughter Sarah, and there should be left any issue between them, I desire the said premises should be rented out for the benefit of such issue, and in case that the said James Luten and my Daughter Sarah Luten should die without issue lawfully begot between them, then and in that case I give and bequeath the said houses and lotts to my Daughter Ann and her heirs. FOURTHLY I give and bequeath to my dear and well beloved Daughter Anne Green all the remainder of my Estate both real and personal (except my wearing apparel which I give and bequeath to my beloved friend John Bennett) FIFTHLY and Lastly I do by these Presents nominate and appoint my dear and well beloved Wife Elizabeth Green Executorship, and my beloved friends Mr. Charles Bondfield and Mr. William Righton Executors to this my last Will and Testament, declaring at the same time I am in perfect senses and memory.
