Chowan County, NC - Will of Thomas Hoskins, 1762 The Last will and Testament of Thomas Hoskins (Dec 2, 1762) In the Name of God Amen. I Thomas Hoskins of the Parrish of Chowan in the Province of North Carolina, planter, being sick and weak of Body, but of perfect mind and memory. Do make this my Last will and Testement(sic), revoking all Wills oral or in wrighting (sic) made before by me. First, I commit my Soul to the Almighty God that gave it me and my body to The dust from which it came, to be Decently Buried according to the rules of the Christian Burials, in full & certain hopes of the Glorious Resurrection at the the Last Day, & as for all my personal & real Estate, which it hath pleased God to Endue (sic) me with all, I bequeath and Bestow as followeth after my Debts is paid and My Funerall (sic) Expenses is Discharged. Inprimus. I give to my Son Thomas Hoskins, the plantation whereon he now lives, containing one hundred acres During his Natural life and then I give twenty Acres more over the Bridge Swamp, which I purchased of John Tyner after the same manner & after his discea-Se. I Give the Said Land to my grandson Thomas Hoskins & the heirs of his Body Lawfully begotten for Ever. Likewise give him the use of a Negro Girl named Kate and her increase During his Natural life & at his Discease (sic) to be equally Divided between my two Grandaughters Mary & Keziah. Item I give my Daughter Elizabeth Coffield the use of the plantation whereon she now lives During My pleasure Containing by Estimation two hundred Acres Lying on the Chowan River and also a Negro whench (sic) named Pothena and a Negro child named Luck and all the increase During my pleasure but if I Should Die before I alter my Mind my Desire is she should have them her natural Life & at her Decease I give the Land to my Grandson Thos Coffield & the heirs of his body Lawfully begotten for Ever, my will & Desire is no part nor parcel Should be Sold out of it, and as for the Negros my will is they at her Decease Should be Equally Divided between my Grandson Thos Coffield & John Coffield. Item I give to my son John Hoskins a plantation which I bought of Jeremiah Mitchaner (sic) and Martha his Wife containing one hundred and fifty acres to him & the heirs of his body Lawfully begotten for Ever & if in case he should have no heir I give it to my Son William and the heirs of his body Lawfully begotten for ever. I Likewise Give to him a Negro boy named James and the horse whereon he now rides, a bed & furniture he now lies on. Item I give to my Daughter Mary a plantation Joining to Everard Garret Containing fifty Acres a Negro whench (sic) named Doll a feather bed & furniture whereon she now lies a Dozen of New plates, a horse bridle and saddle Likewise I give to her a feather bed & furniture, a horse bridle and saddle. Item I give to my Wife Mary a Negro fellow named Samson, a Molattew (sic) named Bess and her Increase During her natural life or Widowhood but in case she should marry or Die than (sic) I give them to my son William and his heirs. I give to my wife Mary a feather bed & furniture. I Likewise Give to my wife Mary my, my son William & my Daughter Rachel all my goods & Chattels not Mentioned in my will to be equally Divided among them three. I Desire my son Thos & Son John shall Divide it, & if they will not stand to there (sic) judgment but will goe (sic) to Law shall be cut our of their Share & the other two shall have all but if my Son William should die before he comes of Age my Desire what I have given him Except the Land Should be qually Divided between my three Daughters Mary, Sarah & Rachel and the Land to the Next heir at Law to him & the heirs of his body Lawfully begotten. Lastly I give to my wife my Riding horse and saddle & Chaise. I nominate & Appoint my loving wife Mary & my sons Thos & son John to be whole and sole Extrs (abbreviated) of this my last will and Testament as Witness my hand and Seal his Second Day of December 1762.
