I Richard Hoskins of Chowan County recollecting the uncertainty of this Life, but of sound mind and memory, thanks be to God for it do this ninth day of Augusst 1796 make and publish this my last wll and testament in manner and form following. First I give to my son Samuel all the land and plantation lying in the fork of paradice including part of the land I bot of King Luten that is lying in said fork. Likewise two negroes Harry and Doll to him and his heirs forever. 2n. I give my daughter Catherine two negroes Mingo and Milly to her and to her heirs forever. 3d. I give my daughter Mary nego James and Jethro to her and her heirs forever. 4th. I give my daughter Ann Isac and Pleasant to her and her heirs forever. 5th. I give my son Baker the land Plantation calleds Potters except a small piece that is cleared adjoining the Peach orchard to him and his heirs forever. Likewise one negro lad Jack and my desire is that he may have the first living negro child that may be born of my property after my decease. 6th. I give my son Richard the land and plantation called Howcott likewise my part of the Watermill to him and his heirs forever also one negro lad peter one negro Boy Joe to him and his heirs forever. 7th. I leave to my beloved wife Winifred Hoskins the use of one half of the plantation whereon now dwell She to have her choice, the great ditch to be the line likewise the use of two negroes namely Cato and Sillah during her natural life and after her death to be divided as will hereafter be directed. Likewise I leave to her use my sorrel mare and chair three cows and calves, including six ewes, six cattle from one year old to four one yoke of oxen and my small cart one bed and furniture Six chairs flaged bottomed----Six pewter plates and all the crokery ware one pot and hooks, one dutch oven two chests she to have her choice and as many hogs as will serve her one year with two breeding sows and pigs one walnut table oval one woolen wheel ditto linning and loom and gear for the use of the family. I give to my son Edmund the plantation called Thomsons and the land adjoining running up the swamp to the corner a poplar to him and his heirs forever. I likewise give him one negro Boy Cooper my desire is that my son Edmund may have the second living negro child that may be born after my decease. I give to my son Lemuel the plantation whereon I now dwell likewise part of the land I bought of King Luten lying on the north side of Mill Swamp beginning at the poplar above mentioneers, my desire is that my wife may keep as many of the children as may be convenient and that the negroes that have not been given may be hired out to support the six small children viz Martha, Sarah, Winnifred, Elizabeth, Fanny and Lemuel untill the youngest of them comes to the age of twentyone years then to be a division amongstt them, the names of the negroes not yett given Dick, Toney, Fillis, Old Addam, Morish, Moses, Delah, John, Rachel, (Cato & Sellah to be divided after the death of my wife, among the six above mentioned children share and share alike. And if my son Lemuel should die before he comes to said age, I desire my son Richard to have his plantation and Richard's Plantation above given to be sold and divided between the six last mentioned children and as there is a piece of Cypress Swamp I desire all my sons except Samuel may have the use of said timber equally as (illeg) the fork of paradice but the swamp to remain for the (illeg) Mill as long as the Mill remain in the family but should it be otherwise, I desire it may belong to them who adjoins it which will be Richard, Edmund and Lemuel. My desire is that all the Beds may be kept for the use of the family and to be given as they marry & whereas there is some old Silver spoons, I desire that my son Lemuel have the best half dossen table spoons the other eight to be divided between Elizabeth and Fanny, three setts tea spoons, one sett I give my wife, one sett to Sarah and one sett to Martha. Lastly I desire my two oldest sons Samuel and Baker to Execute the above business as my last will and testament working and (illg) with wishes heretofore made by me.
