CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Billy Gene Dyer, 9 May 1965 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Billy Gene Dyer Killed In Wreck Billy Gene Dyer, 21 of Route 6, was killed in a motorcycle-bus collision at the intersection of N.C. 180 and Road 2052 about 6 p.m. Wednesday. Dyer, who resided with his wife and small child at Blanton Motor Court, was riding south on a motorcycle on N.C. 180 when a bus headed north and operated by Claude Arey Poston attempted a left hand turn into the M&M Service Station. The motorcycle struck the door near the right front of the bus that is owned by Elizabeth Baptist Church. The investigating State Highway Patrol trooper said operator of both vehicles apparently had their vision limited by an unidentified vehicle that allegedly crossed N.C. 180 on Road 2052 (across from Elizabeth to Stoney Point) as both the bus and motorcycle approached. According to the trooper, there was no evidence of speeding. He said the motorcycle traveled only two or three feet after impact. The trooper said Dyer suffered fatal head injuries. The officer added that the victims protective gear was crushed. The trooper quoted Poston as stating he had pulled the bus from Elizabeth Church (about 100 yards away) onto N.C. 180 and did not see the motorcycle when he began his turn a few feet south of the intersection. Poston and his 7 year old son, Claude Jr. were the only occupants of the bus. The trooper said his investigating is continuing, and he added that a coroner's jury will be impounded. Dyer is the sixth traffic fatality of the year in Cleveland County and the first since Dewey F. Tomlin was fatally injured in a Motorcycle/car accident March 28. Both Dyer and Tomlin were operating Yamaha motorcycles.
