The Semi-Weekly Messenger (Wilmington NC) 10 May 1898
Shelby Star: Nelson Epps, colored, who lived on J D Weathers' plantation a few
miles northwest of Shelby, was found dead in the house in which he was living
with a chain around his neck and fastened to the joist, on last Saturday about
10 o'clock. Epps was about 25 years old and had a wife and two children. There
is a strong suspicion of foul play in connection with the death.

(Nelson Epps was in the 1880 census, age 8, living with his family in Rutherford
County. Anderson Epps, age 45 was his father and Jane Epps, age 30 was his
mother. Siblings were Ward Epps, age 19; Tillie Epps, age 14; Rachael Epps, age
12; James Epps, age 10; and Bessie Epps, an infant.)
