Court Called on to Determine Who Gets Bride - Fallston Couple Ran Away and 
Were Married - Husband Claims Girl's Father Took Her by Force From Vehicle

Shelby, Oct 6 - The court is called on to decide who gets a bride - her 
husband or her father. About ten days ago Miss Dessie Lackey and Lee Martin, 
both of Fallston, ran away to South Carolina and were married over the protest 
of the bride's father, Hill Lackey.

The father got out a writ of habeas corpus demanding that the groom bring the 
bride before the court. However, before the writ was served and while the 
newly married couple was returning from South Carolina, the father got control 
of the bride and has since kept her away from her lawful husband. The father 
claims that she came to him by her own will, while the groom contends that the 
father took her by force from the buggy in which they were riding.

However, that habeas corpus was dismissed and another was secured by the groom 
in an effort to get the bride before his honor, Judge James L. Webb.

This proceeding was to have been heard here yesterday, but the father failed 
to bring the bride, claiming that she is out of State. It is reported that she 
has been taken to Virginia. A point of law arose as to whether the court could 
order the bride back to Shelby since she is outside the State.

Judge Webb ruled that since she is under the control of her father, and that 
her father is in the jurisdiction of the court, that places the girl within 
reach of the court and Mr. Lackey is ordered to produce Mrs. Martin in Shelby 
Saturday. If he fails, he will be liable to contempt of court.
