HAYNES HIGH CEMETERY Welches Creek Township, Whiteville, Columbu County, NC Submitted by Dave High, March 1998 North Carolina, Columbus County, NC All rights reserved, 1998. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To Search: Ctrl + F Documentation prepared by David B. High for the Columbus County, NC GenWeb site, Jan 14, 1998. [Added comments are in brackets.] This is a small family cemetery, located in the woods east of Red Hill Road (SR1700). It was created when Haynes High's wife Fannie died of smallpox after nursing the slave Pompey, who also died of the disease. Victims of this disease could not be carried to Whiteville and buried in the cemetery there. I am calling this the Haynes High cemetery because there is at least one additional High family cemetery further up Red Hill Road. The cemetery was surveyed by David B. High and A. Harold Smith in the Fall of 1988. At that time, only five of the known eleven gravesites were marked by stone monuments. We had markers made for the other six graves and installed them. Temporary markers had disappeared or been moved, and positions for the new markers were approximated. 01 Sarah COUNCIL High, 1832-1890 [Second wife of Haynes High] 02 Haynes HIGH, Nov 10, 1810--Apr 30, 1887 [Son of Jacob High, 1775-1842? & Ann Shipman?] 03 Frances BURNEY High, 1819-1862 [First wife of Haynes High, mother of three sons] 04 Jacob HIGH, 6/1862?, 3/11/1930 [ Third son of Haynes High, Wife was Margaret Elizabeth Pierce; Ten children, seven of whom reached adulthood] 05 Leander HIGH, 1896-1898 [ Infant son of Jacob & Margaret Pierce High] 06 Sarah Cordelia HIGH, 1886-1887 [Infant daughter of Jacob & Margaret High] 07 Jefferson Haynes HIGH, 1884, 4/30/1887 [Infant son of Jacob & Margaret High] 08 Bertha May HIGH, 5/10/1901, 3/4/1911 [Daughter of Charles & Rebecca "Morrie" King High] 09 Morrie [Rebecca KING] , 12/1865, 3/2/1935 [Wife of Charles High] 10 Charles HIGH, 12/1858, 3/18/1930, [Four choldren, three of whom reached adulthood; same stone as #9] 11 Lou BRIGHT, ? Duncan, dated December, 1983 (2-4) is only partially correct. Margaret Elizabeth "Mag" Pierce High, wife of Jacob "Jake" High, is buried in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery, with her son Henry Charles High and his family; she did not wish to be buried in the private cemetery. ©1998 Jerome Smith, Columbus County Coordinator Columbus County, North Carolina, USA All rights reserved. ====================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogy information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
