1860 COLUMBUS COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA CENSUS DATA Submitted by Dave High, dbhigh@weblnk.net, December 18, 1997 Columbus County, North Carolina All rights reserved, 1997. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This contribution to the US GenWeb Project is my transcription of an earlier transcription of the original records contained in the Washington, DC and Raleigh, NC archives by Jason McLeod Williamson, dated and copywrited 1988, by the kind permission of his heirs and the Columbus County Library, to which his rights were assigned. The present submission, made as a work-in-progress, consists of the main text of the census, some 1100 households enumerated by individual name, age, sex and occupation. To this, I have added notes on the Civil War service of Columbus County residents, as researched and correlated to the Census record by earlier researchers. It is thought that this additional information will be of real benefit and interest to those who use the resource. In many cases, the military data adds greatly to the detail which is available on individuals, in respect to given names, corrections to Census data errors, and aid in pinpointing relationships and ages. Military organizations are believed to be NC units, except where noted otherwise. The Williamson transcription included a table of abbreviations. This has been eliminated by spelling out occupations completely enough that the meanings should be obvious. The data has been rearranged alphabetically to make location of individuals and families easier than in the original ordering by household number. This permitted elimination of the surname index. The household numbers are retained, to permit easy reference back to the original Census records or transcript if required. An effort has been made to point out discrepancies in the records, and to offer alternative interpretations when that seemed reasonable. The transcriber's contributions are enclosed in brackets. An index is provided to surnames which are listed within a household of different surname. I have added the 1860 Schedule of Slaves to the document. I do not plan to transcribe the Mortality Schedule, which is also included in the Census and in the Williamson transcription. I would like to hear from users, and will consider any suggestions for improving the document.
