WHITEVILLE COLUMBUS CO. N. C., May 1, 1861.
Gentlemen:---I write you a few lines to inform you of our proceedings here.  We 
are fully alive to the necessities of our country, and every man is determinded to 
meet the foe in a way to teach him that they will do or die.  There is no 
faltering here, but a fixed purpose to ontend for every inch of ground.  We have 
raised 5 companies; one has gone to Raleigh, one to Fort Caswell, and three 
awaiting orders.  Also a company of free negroes who have tendered their services 
in our defence.  Columbus is wide awake!
