Monday, MOTHER OF MR. J.A. BARKER PASSES – Mrs. Frances A. Howell Was Oldest Citizen of Whiteville – Had Lived Life of Service Mrs. Frances A. Howell, mother of Mr. J.A. Barker of Lumberton and Whiteville’s oldest citizen, died at her home there Thursday night in her 87th year. Mrs. Howell was born near Lumberton in 1840. In 1856 she married Mr. John W. Barker, who died during the civil war period. In later years she married Mr. Mills Howell of Whiteville. Mrs. Howell was an active and faithful member of Whiteville Baptist church, and her life was one of service. Deceased is survived by five children: J.A. Barker, of Lumberton, Winfield Barker, of Waycross, Ga., Mrs. Lee Formy Duval, of Whiteville, Mrs. D.J. Lewis, of Whiteville, and E.B. Howell, of Charlotte. Besides these she is survived by the following step-children: Mrs. Luther McCormick, of Maxton, Will Howell, of Whiteville, and James Howell, of Wilmington. The funeral was held Friday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock from the house. Rev. L.T. Newton, former pastor of the Whiteville Baptist church conducted the service, assisted by Rev. R.L. Edwards of the Methodist Church, Rev. Mr. Roach of the Baptist church, and Rev.
