Carman Collection New Bern, North Carolina 1746-1898; 1931 PC 390 Physical Description: Land patent, deeds, affidavit, statements, surveys, letters, notebooks, 31 items Acquisition: Loan from Mrs. Bessie C. Carman, Chicago, Illinois and New Bern, North Carolina, February 29, 1948 - Letter, 1796, Irish deed, age book, and affidavit, July 29, 1957; 15 Beaufort County deeds, 12 miscellaneous family records Description: Eleven deeds trace land in Beaufort County on the south side of the Pamlico River, near Bath, from an original grant in 1730 to John Tripp, through numerous owners, to Jesse Hartfield, by court sale in 1860, and from Jesse to James F. Hartfield, in 1868. Other deeds, surveys, affidavits, and statements relate to J.F. Hartfield's property known as Broak Neck in Onslow County (1878-1897), and two surveys of land owned by J.F. Hartfield (1898) Miscellaneous statements give the descendants of M.C. and Mary Ann (Ellis) Stephens and of Jesse and Julia Taylor Hartsfield (1842). An "age book" of Bishop E. Dudley lists his and Elizabeth (Jones) Dudley's descendants;; it also includes a list of Negroes - their birth and death dates (1820-1858). Another notebook enumerates the birth and death dates of Elizabeth A., Sarah S., Mrs. Eliza A. (wife of Jesse), and Jesse Hartfield There are three letters in the collection. The earliest (1796) from Francis Stringer, Armagh, Ireland, to Samuel Simpson, Greenville, NC, tells of his fathers provision for Stringer's wife Anne of a hundred pounds a year in the event her husband died first. Copy of a deed from the Registry of Deeds, Ireland, gives the details A letter from J.F. (?) Hartfield, April 24, l841, Lenoir County, to John Glasgow, requests collection of accounts for tuition of children from several families The third letter is from Annie E. Hartfield, New Garden, NC, February 23, 1873, to her brother James F. Hartfield, Catherine Lake, Onslow County, NC Included in the collection is a certified statement (February, 1931) listing men employed by the Confederate government to capture deserters in eastern North Carolina, as recalled by J.H.
