Smith 1920, Craven, Jones & Anson Counties, NC Transcribed by Katharine Eubank Jordan Oct 2009 from a file of correspondence held in 1984 by the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. These are excerpts from Eubank research notes sent by Kate D (Mrs. J. Morgan) Smith of Birmingham, AL to a genealogist, Dr. Turner, in 1920. ******************************************************* July 1 (c. 1920) A.A. Eubank to K.D. Smith - extracts "My brother U.S. Eubank showed me your letter of June 17, and asked me to look over our old papers and records and see if I could get any of the information you want. I had an old aunt who died about 30 years ago this year who used to talk a great deal about the old people. She could recollect when great- grandfather John Eubank died and she said all Eubanks in this part of the State descended from two brothers who came from Maryland - one named George, who was her great-great-grandfather, used to live on Trent river. Jones County was then Craven Co, N.C. he was the father of the Thomas Eubank you mention in your letter. Thomas Eubank was the father of her grand-father John Eubank and Elijah who moved from Jones County to Tennessee about 1800. He sold his place to his brother John and moved away. I have a letter in our old papers that he wrote to his brother John dated 1802. --- "I also have a letter written to Thomas Eubank from his daughter Elizabeth Jones, who was married to a man named Jones and they lived in Anson county N.C. in 1772 when that letter was written. I also have a record of John Eubank (my great-grand-father having a son named Thomas who moved to Chatham county N.C. and I am informed he has many descendents in that part of the State now. I cannot find any old records among my old papers that go any further back than Thomas Eubank (died in 1776). We have a box of old papers that tell lots about Thomas and his sons John and Elijah and John's children, but from what old aunt Jane used to say Thomas Eubank was the son of George Eubank who came to North Carolina from Maryland and that he had a brother who came with him - both settled in what was then Craven Co. now Jones Co.' --- "None of the old Eubanks in this family were in the war of the Revolution, or the war of 1812. My aunt used to tell me this. I listened to her when she was telling family history, but I was a boy and young then and never took any of it down, as I should have done. I have no Bible record further back than my grandfather's", (He gave me addresses of several persons among them an old cousin living at Wilmington, Mrs. Cox and I wrote her. K.D.S.) "Mrs. Cox wrote - 'My great-grandfather was Thomas Eubank - his name is all I remember and do not recall the names of his brothers and sisters, tho' I probably heard them when I was quite small. I do recall hearing my father say his grand-father was a Quaker, and I remember that my grand-mother always wore a grey silk bonnet and grey cape when she went out. I am sorry I can give you so little information. I am 77 years old and have lived away from those who could have told me of our family history.' July 19, Mr. A.A. Eubank to K.D. Smith - "You said you would like to have copies of the old letters. I am sending the originals and you can make copies and return the old letters as I want to keep them. === "our line should be. I.
