Craven County, NC - African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Blacks in New Bern founded the first African Methodist Episcopal Zion church in the South. In April, 1864, the Black congregation of Andrew Methodist Episcopal Chapel joined the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Conference and renamed their church St. Peter's. They were led in this change by the Reverend (later Bishop) James Walker Hood, who was sent to New Bern by A.M.E. Zion officials in New England in response to a request by the Andrew Chapel congregation. Hood remained for a time as pastor of St. Peter's and subsequently became one of the state's most active and influential Black men.
