Craven County, NC - 1814 Election for Representatives New York Herald October 5, 1814 Newbern Election - We some time since published a letter from a gentleman at Newbern, N.C. relating to a state election at that place which terminated in favor of Mr. Stanley the federal candidate; at which it was said a riot had been set on foot and headed by Mr. Pasteur his opponent. The following certificate has appeared in a Carolina paper in a answer. Impartiality requires to give it upon request of the party implicated. We the undersigned, the Sheriff of the county of Craven, and Inspectors and Clerks of the poll held at Newbern, on the 11th Aug. last, for the election of Representatives to the general Assembly of this State, having been called upon by Col. E. Pasteur to state the occurences which took place on that day under our immediate observation - do say, that we did not observe more than from ten to eighteen sailors at or near the polls; that of this number five were admitted to vote - that no violence was used to prevent any person voting, either by the sailors or others. Nor did we see any sailors headed by Mr. Huntington, or any federalist pointed out by him. We saw no eyes pulled out, brains blown out, or lives lost in any way. It will be understood that our remarks extend to occurrences which came under our view as officers conducting the polls, at and in the immediate neighborhood thereof, except as to the loss of eyes or lives, which did not happen in the town or country in consequence of the election.
