ARTHUR, Sarah T. ARTHUR, Bryan WHITFORD, Jno. S. ASKINS, Witness statements: Witness GC ARTHUR stated that on day of death he was dressing hoofs and his father [the deceased] was cutting basket splits. His father went inside and GC heard a gun fire and went in to see what was the matter. Could not find his father, and got the horn to blow; his wife came in and said his father was in the kitchen dead. S. ARTHUR stated she had been there 6 years, and never knew M. ARTHER to take a gun to go off before. She went in search of him & went to the kitchen & saw his feet & turned & went to tell her husband. The gun had not been used in some time. She thinks he was in sound mind yesterday [day of death]; he was not intoxicated. He was somewhat deranged last week & his "hole crave to dg." WHITFORD said M. ARTHUR had been for years somewhat deranged. WHITFORD visited him in Dec 1872; knew he was deranged. ASKINS stated he had known the deceased 20 years, and had known him to be deranged several times. ASKINS had been to see him lately; he appeared to be in his mind at times and at others was not. GC ARTHER was recalled and recanted and said that he thought at times his father was deranged. Inquest verdict: Death occurred near Little Swift Creek. Verdict: Came to his death from gun shot by his own hands while out of his mind.
