Petition for freeing of George Gavotte Sabrina, Sarah Lyd & Shines

State of North Carolina, Craven County
Court of Pleas & Quarters petition, June Term 1801

To the worshipful the Justices of the County Court of Pleas & Quarter 
Superior now letting for the County aforesaid.

The Petition of Benners Vail humbly theist to your worships that John 
Benners late of the County of Craven dec’d by his last will and 
testament, directed the following Negroes should be set free in 
consideration of this inventory & valuables following (viz) George 
commonly know by the name of George Gavotte Sabrina Sarah Stephen Lyd & 
Shine and appoint to your petitioner executor of said will – your 
petitioner further shows that he caused the said Last will & testament 
of said John to be proven in the form and has taken upon himself the 
burden in & execution thereof, and is desirous of having the will of 
his testator carried unto affect as it regard the Negroes before named. 
The therefore prayer to your worship in consideration of the 
inventories levied of the said George Sabina, Sarah Stephen Lyd & Shine 
will be pleased to order and grant hence to them and each of them that 
they may be hereafter free emancipated – your petitioner further shows 
unto your worship that his testator in his said last will and testament 
has made a provision for the support of said Negroes by a bequest of 
lands which is more than sufficient for this support. He therefore 
prays that you will be pleased to grant the prayer of his petition, As 
in duty bound brained he aril the pray.
