CLEVE, Chas CHERRY, Johnson SIMPSON, H. KIRKMAN, H. CANNADY, A. DIXON & Levi MORRIS Witness statements: CAMPBELL says that he knows nothing about it, except he saw the boat on Friday, floating in the river up to the bank. Didn't know CHERRY had been fishing, and didn't know whose boat it was. Saw the fishing pole floating in the water, and took it out and put it in the boat. ROACH says that deceased came into his bar on Friday morning, and asked for "a little tetch." ROACH gave him a measure, then CHERRY asked where the gin barrel was, and drew not exceeding 1/2 gill, which he drank, then said, "I thought to go a fishing this morning" and left. ROACH didn't see him again but once, and was with Nelson GASKILL Saturday morning. Went with others to find him, and saw some buzzards about 50 yards from where they found him. GASKILL says he heard CHERRY say he was going fishing. Doesn't know if he went or not, but when they were looking for him he saw his pipe in the boat and knew it was his. R. CLEVE said that he and Capt. CHERRY and Macon BRYANT went looking for him; didn't find him, but saw his boat and pipe lying on or under the seat. "He was not much of a drinking man--but one glass of liquor would affect him." BRYAN said that he saw him that morning and asked him where he was going; he "said he was going to kill a man." Otherwise, statement the same as R. CLEVE's. MORRIS says the same as ROACH. W. CLEVE says that he saw him that morning going across the bridge and asked him where he was going. He said, "I am going over the creek to kill me a man." He was not in liquor. C. CHERRY says he was away and doesn't know anything about it. He was a good man, and never knew him to be under the influence of liquor except twice. He was a good character. Other witnesses all corroborate other testimony. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 15 Aug 1883 at Vanceboro. Accidentally drowned in Swift Creek at or near Vanceboro.
