JONES, Laura HALL, Henry PELHAM Inquest held at Trent Settlement on 12 May 1869. JONES identified body. HALL stated she saw GREEN in a canoe passing under the bridge with a load of lumber. About 10 minutes later she heard he drowned. The wind was very high. PELHAM testified that GREEN worked for him, and was carrying a load of lumber from New Bern to James City. Had never known GREEN to drink. No one saw boat capsize. Verdict: Accidentally capsized canoe opposite James City. Inquests 1860-1869 (broken series) Heppie COLLINS 30 June 1869 WR HUDSON, R. FINCH, Cesar ELLISON, Peggie STARKEY Inquest held at Foster Wharf in New Bern. STARKEY testified that the deceased was her granddaughter, who had lived with her since her parents died. ELLISON testified that he saw her standing on the wharf at about 1:00 with a basket. He told her to be careful or she would fall overboard. Between 3 and 4:00 he came back and saw the basket sitting there, and thought she must have drowned. Called FINCH and HUDSON, who fished the body out. FINCH and HUDSON certify to this. Verdict: Deceased came to death by falling accidentally in the wharf near R. FINCH & Co. Mill on E. Front St., New Bern.
