[Originally said 30 December 1878] Witnesses: Edward HARRIS, Caesar COWARD, Daniel COWARD Witness statements: HARRIS says that he found the body in the Neuse R. near the Mud Seine Beach on Saturday morning April 1, 1879. Was attracted there by the buzzards. Went to see what it was and found a human being. Tied him to a "home beam," notified his people, then sent word to the sheriff of Craven Co. to notify the coroner. C. COWARD says that the deceased is his son. He left home on the Monday before Christmas (23 Dec 1878). He was in good health. C. COWARD next heard about him on the Friday after Christmas (27 Dec), when he heard he had fallen from a flat boat by the breaking of a pole and was drowned. Thinks deceased was of ordinary sober habits. He was 22 years old. D. COWARD says that he knows nothing of the drowning, but recognizes the body as Anthony COWARD of Hookerton Greene Co. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 14 April 1879.
