Craven County, NC - Charles Stewart v. Thomas H. Davis, 1819 - Addendum ~~~~~~~~~~ The defendant is Thomas H. Daves (Thomas Haynes Daves) who was the Sheriff of Craven Co., NC. He is one of my Haynes ancestors. He was the son of Mary Haynes & her 3rd husband John Daves. His brother was John Pugh Daves whose daughter, Mary McKinlay Daves, married 2nd Governor Ellis. His sister had been Sally Eaton Daves Jones, whose daughter Mary McKinlay Pugh Daves had been adopted by Eaton Pugh, half brother of the same Mary Haynes. (Mary was the daughter of Andrew Haynes & Anne Eaton; while Eaton Pugh was the son of Anne Eaton Haynes & 2nd husband John Pugh) There are many record abstracts about that have transcribed Davis rather than Daves - including the NC Wills, where the will of Eaton Pugh incorrectly shows bequests to John P. Davis and Thomas H. Davis. The same spelling applies to the following record: State-Wide, NC - Act to Collect Tax Arrears, 1817 Thomas H. Daves, sheriff of Craven county, be and he is hereby authorized to collect the arrears of taxes due him for the years eighteen hundred and fourteen and fifteen... ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
