J. MCSORLEY, Reuben BERRY, Toney COTTEN, J.D. WALLACE, John DANIELS, Witness statements: MCSORLEY says he and John [deceased] and another boy were out sailing and crabbing. John was sitting up on the forward part of the boat, and MCSORLEY told him to get down or he would fall, but he wouldn't. The boat gave a lurch and John fell in. MCSORLEY threw him an oar, but he failed to get it and sank out of reach. BERRY says he saw him fall in and sink. BERRY was on the wharf and could render no aid. COTTEN says he was on the RR bridge near the draw. This little man was standing on the extreme forward part of the boat and fell in. COTTEN saw one of the boys throw an oar to him but he didn't catch it. The boat did not jibe but careened & threw him out. WALLACE says he went out to the bridge today when notified that the body was found & looked down and saw him standing on the bottom; got him out and brought him ashore & delivered him to the coroner. DANIELS corroborates the last witness. Inquest verdict: Inquest held on 11 Aug 1885 in New Bern. Came to his death by accidental drowning.
