DIXON 15 April 1866 John F. FARRINGTON Inquest held 16 Apr 1866 at John F. FARRINGTON residence. FARRINGTON states that DIXON was in his employ and was shot in his inclosure on 1 April 1866. Suspicions had been aroused about Godfrey BECTON, Jacob HATCH, and others and a white man named LAWRENCE. DIXON was watching FARRINGTON's lot to guard against depridations, and was shot on attempting to arrest a negro whom he caught on the lot about 3:00 AM. FARRINGTON was aroused by the sound of the fireing of the revolvers, and DIXON entered his room immediately and said they have shot me, and fell on the floor. Wound was produced by a shot or ball from a revolver that the negro wrested from DIXON. FARRINGTON cared for DIXON at his house until now. Drs. ISAAC and James HUGHS have been his medical attendants. Godfrey BECTON was brought in his presence some days since; DIXON confirmed this was the man who shot him. DIXON died of his wounds last night. Recommended as witnesses: Brice MOORE, Henry FONVIEL, Jim KEELER, Col. HARNER, Mr. CALIGAN the policeman, Detective GARDNER of the steamer BETTI, the white man LAWRENCE if not implicated. Verdict: Death by gunshot wounds in the hands of a Negro, name unknown.
