MIDGETT, Killis SPATES, Fanny BOON, Samuel GIBSON, Jerry ROBINSON, Sam MOORE, Sarah DOZIER, Tom BOON, Molly FERRIBEE Witness statements: MIDGETT says he was crabbing at the end of the bridge, and heard someone halloa out that Essex was being drowned, ran down on the bridge to where he was and saw him go down--saw nothing but his hands. SPATES says he was at the end of the bridge crabbing and a little boy called to him and said that Essex was in swimming and would drown. SPATES ran down to the spot where the boys were and saw the hands of Essex as he sank for the last time. Sam GIBSON, Sam MOORE & Tom BOON were with Essex crabbing when he fell in. F. BOON says she was with the previous two witnesses crabbing at the end of the bridge when she heard someone say Essex was swimming. She told him not to go in because the water was so deep. She did not see him go in. GIBSON said that when he first saw Essex he was in the water going down the last time. He had no fuss with anyone. GIBSON was about 20 feet away, and did not see or hear him when he fell in. He told the boys Essex was in swimming and he would drown. ROBINSON said that when he heard he had drowned, he began to search for him, and kept at it till he found him lying on his back on the bottom of the river. MOORE says he didn't see him at all and doesn't know anything about it. DOZIER says all she knows is what GIBSON said. T. BOON says he never saw him until he saw him going down the last time; he was about 40 or 50 yards away. FERRIBEE said she is the mother of Essex. She did not know that he was down to the water till she heard he had drowned. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 1 Aug 1879. Deceased came to his death by accidental drowning.
