SMITH, John BLADE, Pleasant JONES Witness statements: SMITH said he didn't know much about it; he was in the saloon about 3 AM. He was lying down but before he got to sleep, they came and told him Hancy was dead. She cooked and sold things in the eating line. She was often drunk, & no doubt was drunk then. BLADE said that he shut up his place about 3 AM & went to Aunt Hancy's place to get some oysters, but didn't get any. He went back to his bar to go to sleep & laid down on 3 chairs and went to sleep. He heard the cry of fire and got up and went to Aunt Hancy & her place was all on fire. The threw water on the fire & her. She was not dead then. He found her in "the same position you did." She was pretty drunk. JONES said that he (or she) only knows that he went into the bar to go to bed. Heard the cry of fire, went in, and threw water on Hancy. Did not go into the room at all except for this. They slept upstairs over the bar. He/she went up to get some things out of a trunk. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 27 Dec 1884. Came to her death by being accidentally burned while drunk.
