H. HADLEY DOD: 17 Nov 1880 Witnesses: James LUCAS, W.L. MOORE, J. DAWSON, H. MOORE, J.R. JONES, P. SMITH Witness statements: LUCAS states that this morning he came out of the road from Dr. HINES's place on the Vail Road track 7 was walking toward the dark house when he saw something that he thought was an overcoat lying in the road. When he got to it, he saw the boy lying in the road with the gun beside him. Informed coroner. W.L. MOORE corroborates LUCAS; they were walking together. DAWSON states he saw the dead boy coming out today between 9 & 10 o'clock with his gun. Did not speak to him. Believe he was of sound mind. H. MOORE says he went out gunning with the deceased yesterday, but does not know what he [HADLEY] did today. Knows that he handled his gun very carelessly. JONES states he saw HADLEY yesterday on the track near where he is now and he had his mouth over the muzzle of his gun blowing into her. He warned HADLEY of the danger; said he would get shot someday. SMITH says he only knows that he saw him with a gun coming up the road like he was going hunting. Did not see him again until he saw him dead. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 17 Nov 1880 in New Bern. Came to his death by the accidental discharge of his gun while he was loading it.
