HICKS DOD: 16 Nov 1878 Witnesses: Arthur IPOCK, Thos HOLLIS, Henderson SIMMONS Witness statements: IPOCK says that HICKS came in the cookroom of the Pile Driver about 7:00 PM; said he was going to a little prayer meeting. Started toward the head of the Pile Driver to get into a boat and stepped overboard, over the bow. It was very dark. HOLLIS said he saw him when he stepped overboard. He had a torchlight in his hand. HOLLIS jumped into the boat and caught HICKS by the fingers, but he tore loose; HICKS then caught HOLLIS by the sleeve, but the strong current tore him loose and he disappeared. HENDERSON corroborates the other 2 statements. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 18 Nov 1878. Find that the deceased came to his death from accidental drowning.
