HAHN, Malvinia WASHINGTON, Jane MOSELY, Patsie FULCHER, Hannah FULCHER, Alice GARNER, Bettie DURSK, Susan DURSK, Matilda DAVIS, Larunda DAVIS, Mary HOWARD Inquest held 12 June 1869 on Oak St. in New Bern. HAHN testified that Dolly HOWARD did washing for his family. Did not know she was "in the family way." Ab. 2 weeks prior another girl came to get the wash, said that HOWARD was sick. WASHINGTON testifed that about 2 weeks ago HOWARD asked her to come and do washing for her because she was sick. Did not know anything about the baby until last night. At about 9 PM walked by HOWARD's house and saw a lot of dogs barking in her yard. Called to HOWARD who did not answer. Went and got L. DAVIS, P. FULCHER, H FULCHER, A. GARNER, B DURSK, S DURSK, and M DAVIS. Found the dogs growling over the dead body of an infant child. Called HOWARD again, told her about the body. Also stated that she did not know the cause of HOWARD's sickness, but that last Tues. night she said she had severe stomach pains. Dolly HOWARD testified that 2 weeks ago tonight she gave birth to a child; it was dead. She put it in a blanket and put it under her bed until last Wed. [June 8] when she buried it in the garden. No one was with her when she gave birth except her little children. Kept it unburied until its father came; kept it secret because did not want anyone to know about it. Father is William SMITH (colored). M. HOWARD testified that D. HOWARD is her sister, knew nothing about the baby. Other witnesses all say they knew nothing. MOSELY stated she lives with D. HOWARD, knew nothing, noticed no offensive smell.
