WOODS Witness statements: ELLISON states he and deceased came down the Neuse R Mon night the 19th loaded with wood they got up the river, and when they goff Mr. [can't read] Mill ELLISON saw the boat was sinking. He told LANGLEY to stick with the boat; ELLISON was sculling & LANGLEY was in front. ELLISON was trying to get the boat ashore, and LANGLEY jumped out and told ELLISON to throw him an oar, which he did, but LANGLEY failed to catch it and went down. ELLISON was trying to save himself. LANGLEY caught at the oar 3 or 4 times. ELLISON could swim, but was looking out for himself; he had heard that LANGLEY was a good swimmer. ROBERTS said he has been acquainted with the deceased for 4 or 5 years. WOODS says he saw them start off together in the boat with wood from up the river. WOODS was on the bank of the river. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 24 April 1886 at Fishers Wharf, New Bern. Stanly LANGLEY was accidentally drowned.
