STAFFORD, Capt. E.J. SATTERTHWAITE
Witness statements: LAWRENCE says that the deceased was her sister. She has 
not seen her since last Friday [June 11-sbg] when she was at her house at 
their grandmother's in James City. Does not know anything else about it. HATCH 
states she doesn't know anything about it. BELL says they were walking over 
the bridge after the "hard blow" Saturday night [June 12] and the deceased had 
hold of her (BELL's) hand and she slipped and fell through the bridge and fell 
down. It was about dark. FOY says she saw her fall and go through the bridge 
and sink. She made a fuss as she was going down. She was hurrying "us all" out 
of town before the squall. STAFFORD said he was with Anaka [FOY] and Laura 
BELL and Mahala the deceased and saw her slip and stumble through the bridge. 
Saw no one push or strike her. He tried to save her, but could not get hold of 
her. Thinks she hit her head on a beam. She had a bundle of flour & rations in 
her arms. It was after the squall about dark. SATTERTHWAITE says when he got 
up this morning [June 14] & went on deck he found the body of the deceased at 
the bow of his boat the schooner Virginia DARE. Notified the coroner.
Inquest verdict: Inquest held 14 June 1880 in New Bern. Came to her death by 
accidental drowning after falling through the bridge.
