Verdict: Came to his death by the accidental discharge of a gun held in the hands of both LEWIS and David MANLEY. Witness SHACKLEFORD examined body after death, and found a wound on the left cheek that passed through the bone, sufficient to cause death. Alfred testified the boys (LEWIS and MANLEY) were playing with the gun in the kitchen, he told them not to play with it, then heard shot, went to LEWIS and stretched him out. Joe testified he had used the gun earlier in the day to shoot crows, left a load of small shot in the gun. When the gun fired which killed LEWIS, heard MANLY exclaim "Lord mercy me, did not know the gun would fire." Abilene testified similarly. HARGET testified he owned gun, always left it by the door for plantation use. One of the boys was hired, one was bound.
