STILLEY, Lewis HUDSON, Lizzie BEECHAM, Sarah BROWN, Mary THOMAS, Joseph FOWLER, JP, David WALKER, Doct MARR, Fred MILLER, Lizzie FRENCH, Nancy WILLERBY, Elijah WILLERBY, John BROOKS, Nancy STILLEY Inquest held on 13 October 1869 at Bay River. This was a complicated case with many witnesses. The following is a summary of all testimony: LINSEY and his wife lived at Bay River. On 9 August 1869, most of the witnesses testified to hearing gunshots, and soon after it was discovered that LINSEY and wife had been shot. Most of the witnesses went to the house, where the two were found shot, but still alive. No exact date of death was given, but it appears that they might have lived as long as 2 weeks. Most of the witnesses testified that they were people of good character, but Fred MILLER said he had heard bad things about them, and the sheriff said he had once arrested LINSEY for cattle stealing. They particularly seemed to have had problems with Thomas B. SPENCE, who had threatened LINSEY, saying he would give him a wooden shirt and send him where the buzzards wouldn't find him. Associated with SPENCE was David WALKER. They also had some problem with Henry JONES. They told several witnesses that they did not know who shot them, but LINSEY believed it was JONES, and his wife believed it was SPENCE. SPENSE was arrested, but escaped, and is now a fugitive. Disputes seem to be related to the land he lived on (not clear who owned it), but TINGLE (perhaps sheriff or other law enforcement) asked LINSEY if he thought that his being a conjurer might have been the cause of the shooting, and he said he would not be surprised. LINSEY appears to be a relative newcomer to the area. Alfred JOHNSON, John D. RIGGS, H. THOMAS, Jessie SAWYER, Jessie H. BEACHAM, Malachi PANE, Henrietta SELL, John HADDER, Thos.
