They were going very fast, because the current was in their favor. As they went along, Freeman complained of being chaped, and the others told him to let Johnny take his pole. He said, "No--if a man gives up for every little ailment he will perish." He then went to "make a set" of his pole, & it slipped off a slippery log it struck, and he saw he was going to fall, so he made a jump like and went about 10 feet from the flat. As he came up he grabbed the pole & threw himself back and sank & rose 3 times. SIMMONS and HARGATE talked to him and tried to encourage him to hold on & they would get him, but they could do nothing for him. HARGATE corroborates SIMMONS, except to add that they got hold of the other end of his pole & pulled him up towards them & got him no distance at all before he let go & sank. MONJOHN says that he went to look for him Saturday & found him Sunday morning about 150 yards from where he went over, lying just as he is now, and they fastened on to him & brought him to town by [the coroner's] permission. HILL and CLARK corroborate MONJOHN. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 1 June 1880. Came to his death by accidental drowning.
