and that he had applied to the sheriff, who had told him that he could leave; the 
case would be continued. He states that he had attended every court session in

the reason he failed to answer when called at the last term.

Information: Examination of William WHITE: States that his wharehouse was broke open
 and 30 bbls. of pork were stolen. He saw several tracks of a chair from the wharehouse to 
the river landing, where his boat had been (where 2 boats had been). He examined the chair 
and found that pork had been carried in the chair. He came to New Bern and found one of 
the boats and got an officer to search the house of PADOCK & SMITH, where was found some 
pork a piece of which was part of the same pork that was stolen.  Examination of John 
HILL: Says he came down in the boat in which the pork was, that the pork was carried up to 
PADOCK & SMITH store, amongst which was the piece sworn to by William WHITE. Examination 
of Nathan MARCHLAND: Says he came part way to New Bern that some pork landed from the boat 
which was carried up in bags to the store of PADDOCK & SMITH. Examination of Stephen 
WHITE: Says he asked PADDOCK & SMITH if they bought that pork (alluding to some pork their 
in their store) down the river with them. One of them answered in the afirmative.. Stephen 
WHITE  in conversation with PADOCK said he wanted some heads to make up a bbl of pork to 
which PADOCK replied that he was in all understanding of the situation and would willingly 
buy a bbl of heads if he could.

custody, Matthew CLEFT, carpenter well knowing the premisses, contrived to procure the 
escape of ADAMS on 18 Mar 1792 by bringing spades, axes, iron hooks, files, ropes, swords, 
&c. to the gaol, and ADAMS escaped.

Information: Oath by Tubman WOOLFORD that he had attended court in Sept 1792 as 
summoned to testify against John HILL on a charge of grand larceny of WOOLFORD's own 
property. He was present for 3 days, but the solicitor general was absent, and no state 
business was done. He "not having been long resident in this state, and of consequence 
being ignorant of its laws" asked for advice from the magistrate, who told him he could 
safely return home until the 7th day of court. When he arrived home, he became violently 
ill, and was unable to return.

Information: Oath by William Barfield "that a few days before the commencement of the 
present term, he was at the House of William SHEPPERD in Glasgow, where he saw the said 
SHEPPERD in a very low state of health,, and confined to his Beds; that his Sickness has 
been of Long Duration, and has reduced him to such a Degree of weakness that there is no 
Probability, the Deponent believes scarce a Possibility, that he will ever recover. The 
Deponent also says that, as far as he is acquainted with the said Shepperd's affairs, they 
are in a very precarioius, and involved situation, his Property going to Decay, and 
Executions of Large amount having as the Deponent understands, been issued against him. 
That the said SHEPPERD has three children, yet in their tender years the eldest not being 
more than six or seven years of age whose Mother not long ago died."

Information: Oath by John PONSONBY that he was to appear in court Sept 1792 to answer 
to several charges, including larceny of the property of James FAULKNER of Lenoir and 
another for a misdemeanor in the county of Dobbs.. Nearly 2 months prior to the court, he 
received information that a considerable property in Maryland had descended to him by the 
death of an uncle and that he would sustain great loss by delaying to take possession, 
"the property being Prey to the rapacity of strangers," so he went to Maryland. While 
there he became violently sick, and was unable to travel for 10 days. This was why he 
failed to attend court. (On back: PONSONBY says that he has been told that the Grand Jury 
found the charge of larceny to be Not a True Bill, and he is not sure about the other 
charge, but believes that the person said to be wronged has been fully compensated).
