Folder: 1801 Information: Deposition of George M. DAMES that he was at the lands of Seldon JASPER for the purpose of receiving a quantity of Iron lent to Benjm. RUPEL Esqr. on account of Mr. Jeremiah MASTIN of Newbern. DAMES went with JASPER to pick out the iron by marks made on the iron in white lead. Some were marked P, some B, and IM or IW, and some of the marks were not distinct enough to to be certain who was the proper owner. [Note: the previous marks on the bars were printed in the document in a style similar to a cattle brand]. JASPER told him to recover what he then had & to weigh it & if the weight overrun it must be returned and if short it must be replaced. When weighed it fell short, and JASPER did replace in quality and kind. Date: 12 Jul 1802 Date of: Deposition County: Hyde Folder: 1801 Information: Deposition of Selden JASPER that last April he went to Newbern and purchased a quantity of iron from Pearce MANNERS marked P [this looks like a script P]; he also bought some from James BRYAN marked B, and some from Jeremiah MASTIN marked IM and some from marked IW. About 8 July John BELL Jun. came to him and asked if he had lost some iron, and JASPER answered that he thought he had. BELL told him that one of JASPER¹s Negroes had given a large bar to a Negro of Benjamin GORMAN¹s named Ned to sell for him. BELL asked JASPER if his iron was marked, and JASPER said it was, and BELL said it must be the same iron. JASPER questioned his slave, who told him that he had sold 3 bars to David DAVIS. JASPER got a warrant and searched the barn of DAVIS and found 7 bars, and this iron was marked as the iron he bought in Newbern.
