The New Bern District covered Ccarteret, Craven, Beaufort, Hyde, PItt, Dobbs, Jones, and Duplin. When Dobbs county was split and then abolished, the new counties were also in the New Bern District. Therefore this is a warrant for the arrest of Aaron Sr. Date: 23 June 1778 (date of warrant) County: Dobbs Folder: State vs. John Barney 1778 Information: Summons for 3Devreaux2 to appear and testify on behalf of John BARNEY Date: 27 May 1778 (date of summons) County: Craven Folder: State vs. John Barney 1778 Information: Deposition of John BARNEY 3who appears to be of mixed blood,2 who says he and some other seafarers came to the house of Mrs. HAYS & drank some rum and water, then bargained with a negro woman of said house to sleep with her that night, that he came and the doors were locked and being in liquor he went down the chimney in order to get to the Negro woman, that he had no intention of stealing or injuring anyone. Another deposition of William HALES that he was called by Mrs. HAYES to her house, and when he arrived found a man sitting who said he came after a negro woman, that he stuck a fish gig into the top of the chimney to let himself by that. He had no intention of robbing or injuring anyone & 3pretended to be much in liquor.2 Date: 24 May 1778 County: Craven Folder: State vs. John Barney 1778 Information: Deposition of Martha HAYS, who said that a John BARNEY and 2 other sailors came to her house and drank some rum and water and left. In the dead time of the night, she was alarmed by the barking of her dog and a noise in her chimney, and the falling of pieces of bricks, so she called William HALES, who came in and found John BARNEY, who sat on a chair and said he was sleepy and drunk. Afterward she found a fish gig on the hearth.
