T. BRIGHT, Wm. LITTLE Inquest held on the Atlantic & NCRR track about 6 or 8 miles below New Berne. LEACH states he was the engineer on the train today, and discovered about 400- 500 yards a lump on the track, but could not tell what it was. He blew the whistle thinking if it was an animal it would get out of the way, then signaled for the brakes down to stop the train, which could not be done until it had passed its length over the body. ARENDALL states he was the conductor on the train and heard the signal to stop, did not know the cause. After stopping found they had run over a man on the road. Went to the spot and found the body separated just above the hips, could not render any assistance, and proceeded the train to New Berne & reported the facts. BRIGHT states he was the section master for this part of the railroad, and believes the deceased to be a wood chopper on his section; thinks his name is Quaker. Was not well acquainted with him and knew little about him. LITTLE states he was acquainted with a wood chopper named Quaker and recognizes features of the deceased to be the same. Has not seen him for 2 weeks. Assisted in moving him off the track, and noticed he had a bottle of liquor in his pocket and his clothes smelled of the same. Believes he was drunk and fell asleep on the track. Coroner complains that the following ignored or refused to answer the summons to testify, and asks that they be fined: J. ASH, Nelson WHITFORD, Thomas HOOKES & W. EARNEST. Verdict: Came to his death by being run over by a train on the RR track.
