Craven County, NC - Brown v. Patrick, 1816 ~~~~~~~~~~ Know all men by these presents that Solomon Patrick of the County of Craven & State of North Carolina for and in consideration of the sum of seven hundred and fifty dollars to me in hand paid by Majr Alexander Brown of the County of Wilkes & State of North Carolina before the sealing & delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have bargained sold & delivered and by these presents I do bargain sell and deliver unto the said Alex Brown three Negroes to wit, Fanny a girl about twenty years of age which I warrant to be with child at this time and Negro woman by the name of Grace and her child by the name of Venus which I warrant to be sound & sensible at this time to have & to hold the said Negroes above mentioned to the said Alex Brown his heirs executors administrators and assigns for ever, and I the said Solomon Patrick for myself my heirs executors adm'r do hereby covenant to & with the said Alex Brown his heirs executors & assigns the said Negroes above mentioned for ever to warrant secure & defend against myself my heirs executors adm'rs & assigns the lawful claim & claims of all & every person or persons whatsoever - In witness where of I have here unto set my hand & seal Brown v Patrick adm's This was an action of covenant for the breach of warranty contained in the bill of sale as to the negro woman Fanny. The material words of the bill of sale are "Fanny a girl about twenty years of age which I warrant to be with child at this time; and a negro woman by the name of Grace and her child by the name of Venus which I warrant to be sound and sensible at this time."
