JONES vs RICHARD DOBBS SPEIGHT, ON HEIRS OF WILLIAM SPEIGHT Craven County, 1814 Found at the NC Archives, Raleigh, NC and abstracted by Martha Mewborn Marble NOTE: Leech is also spelled Leach and Speight is spelled two ways. There is another case posted from NC Reports but it does not appear to be this one although the names are somewhat the same. George Merrick by a clause in his Will devised as follows – I give and bequeath to my nephew George M. Leach and the male heirs of his body the lands purchased of Jeremiah Vail – if said Leech dies without lawful heirs then I give the sd lands to the eldest son of my niece Mary Spaight and Colonial Spaight, dec – the eldest son of Colonial and Mary Spaight was William Spaight who died leaving the def as his heir – George M. Leach has died intestate and without issue leaving 2 sisters one of whom is the wife of the plf. NOTE: In this case she is not named but she is in the other case – Frances Jones. The question – is the plf entitled to any of the estate of the dec. The Court found the plfs are not entitled to the land under the Will.
