Above New Bern on 4 Apr 1761. STANLY stated that he, John MARTIN, & John LEWIS were on a flat boat together. It was laden with shell rock which they had taken off of the banks of Trent R., about 13 miles below Newbern on Thurs. 28 March, and were making their way to Newbern. That night SIMMONS was poling the boat; STANLY heard him make a noise similar to a person having a fit, saw him fall in the water and caught at him and got his hat, but he sunk. Did not see him rise any more. Stopped the boat and waited & looked for him but could not see anything of him. MARTIN corroborated STANLY's testimony. Verdict: Came to his death by accidently falling in the water and thusly was drowned.
