TRUMAN, Bryan HARRIS, H. PADIN Inquest held at Queen St., New Bern on 15 November 1869. TRUMAN testified that that he and victim [and apparently others, perhaps other witnesses] were at J. HUDDLESTON store and all were drinking "pretty hard." SPRUILL took 5 straight drinks, others told him not to drink more, and they all started out. SPRUILL fell twice, and the 2nd time was "dead drunk," so they carried him to the house on Queen St., then left and went to find TRUMAN's brother who was in like condition. The next day, they went back and found him dead. Other witnesses certified same. Verdict: Deceased came by death by congestion of brain caused by immoderate use of liquor.
