HERITAGE, Phillis STARKEY
Witness statements: M. STARKEY says her house fell on her this morning and 
killed her boy at 5 AM. She could not get out; her foot and knee got hurt. 
Went to bed last night before 6 o'clock. Elijah hallowed a little while after 
the house fell-very faint and weak-& then stopped hallowing. Her cousin and 
Mr. HARRIS got her out. JONES said that he heard the house fall and ran to the 
assistance of the inmates. Mary [STARKEY] was calling for assistance; Mr. 
HARRIS came with a light and they pried the boards and joists off and got her 
out. She was hurt "right smart." The wind was not blowing; it was a calm 
night. JONES did not know that Elijah was dead until she [Mary STARKEY] said 
he had ceased hallowing and must be dead. JONES asked where Pete was & she 
said "at the foot of the bed." JONES helped to get them all out except Elijah; 
when he found Elijah was dead, he didn't touch him; he waited for the coroner. 
HARRIS corroborates above witnesses; helped to get them out from planks and 
joists. Found the boy Elijah was dead and left him alone. HATCH corroborates 
other witnesses. HERITAGE stated she heard the house fall and heard that 
Elijah was dead. P. STARKEY corroborates Mary STARKEY. 
Inquest verdict: Inquest held 15 Nov 1880 in New Bern. Came to his death by 
being enmeshed from the falling of the house upon him.
