HUGHES, MD Witness statements: M. JONES says that Tearcy SUTTON appeared to him to be in the family way. She presents a different appearance now than she did some days ago; she shrank to her usual size about Monday 27 Aug 1877. E. JONES said that SUTTON has been living at her for about 2 years. Thought she was in the family way very recently; noticed for the past few days that she had shrank to her usual size. When cross examined said that she had seen SUTTON swollen before in this way & everyone thought she was big with child, but she shrank to her usual size without giving birth to an infant. SUTTON has a child now about 3 years old has never been married, and her child is still nameless. BRYAN says that SUTTON's breast contains milk & is of the appearance of one who has been recently delivered of a child. WIGGINS says that he lives in the same house as SUTTON. Thinks that she was in the family way as of 22 Aug. Noticed on Friday morning Aug 24 that she had shrank to her usual size. Mrs. JONES [Elenor] told him in May that SUTTON was in the family way. When cross-examined, says that on 19 Aug when he came home from church he saw SUTTON approach the end of the Smoke House & saw her beating herself in the stomach & pressing her bowels with bees wax clumps as if trying to destroy an infant in the womb. KORNEGAY says she had seen SUTTON nearly every day for a month. She looked to be in the family way on Tues. and Wed. Aug 21 & 22, but on Fri. Aug 24 she had shrank to her usual size. HUGHES stated that he examined SUTTON with a speculum on 27 "of this month [August]." Her womb shows no evidence of a recent birth. (Goes on to say no bleeding, mouth of womb contracted in a natural way). Also says that SUTTON says she is still nursing her 2-year old, which explains the presence of milk; also says that her milk is not of the same appearance as the milk of someone who has recently given birth. Inquest verdict: Inquest held on 29 Aug 1877. Death occurred in #9 Township. Came to its death by some means which is impossible for this jury to determine."
