SHEPHARD Witness statements: TUCKER says that on the previous night at 7:00 he went to the mill where he worked. At 8:00 he returned to the house and found his wife eating the supper he gave her before he left. Did not stay long, then went back to the mill; returned home again about 11:00 & found his wife sitting by the fire. Staid home until 12:00 & then put her to bed, lit his kerosene lamp, and put out all of the fire in the fireplace. Left the kerosene lamp burning on the mantle piece. Has been in the habit of leaving her alone this way for the last 3 years. After putting her to bed, locked the door and put the key in his pocket and went to the mill. Locked the door to keep her in; on 2 past occasions she crawled out and got in the river. At about 4:00 heard the alarm of fire and went over to his house. When he opened the door, the whole inside of the house was on fire. GREEN says that about 4:00 she first discovered the house of Chas TUCKER on fire. Knew Harriett TUCKER & that she was not of sound mind, and that C. TUCKER her husband always treated her kindly to the best of r knowledge. SPRUILL says that she knows nothing about the as except she saw the house burned down. Says H. TUCKER was demented & that C. TUCKER was always kind to her. SHEPARD says that he lives nearby and that about 4:00 he was alarmed by his own house filling with smoke & he got up & went to the door & began at once to pack up and move. Her husband was kind to his wife, who was considered to be a crazy woman. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 27 Jan 1879.
