DAVIS and Lunnon [also London], property of Gabriel M RAINS 20 June 1819 Benjamin CHANCE (or CHENEY), Bill TYER, Junr., a free person of color of New Bern, Negro Boy Cato the property of Elijah SCOTT of New Bern, Negro boy Jim, property of John DUQUIDS, Gabriel RAINS (son of owner of London), James WILSON, Jurdan BLAND, Negro man Witness Cato said that a number of boys on the wharfs of A.D. STODDART & Wm. WARD and London when Jacob belonging to Sylvester BROWN came out of a boat and coming up to London took hold of him under the arms and he told him that London could not swim, but he threw him in the water, and he and Francis both drowned. TYER said he saw London and Francis in the water, with London's arm around Francis's waist, and both drowned. Jim said that Francis and another boy Alf [torn] tried to save London; Jacob also reached out his foot from the boat to try and save him, but could not. Final decision that London came to his death by the violence of Jacob. Francis came to his death while trying to save London.
