[looks like JLine] DANIELS, Edward WHITFIELD, Dr. M. C. RICHARDSON Witness statements: Witness SMITH says that she went to the pump, left the child alive & well. When came back, found the child screaming. Asked the children what riled the child; they told her Wilson KORNEGA struck it with a cockle shell. SMITH said she would give it back to its mother. Wilson KORNEGA's mother abused SMITH; called her a gray headed old Bitch and other names. The child was struck 12 July and died the Saturday evening July 15, 1871. Witness FRANKLIN said she saw Wilson KORNEGA strike the child with a shell & went running around the corner. Threw the shell at Edward WHITFIELD who was holding the child. Edward called Wilson a Pussy Dog. Wilson was after Easter [last name not given], and Edward called him a Pusy Dog. DANIELS said the same. WHITFIELD said he was holding the baby when Wilson struck her with a shell. Wilson was throwing at Edward; Edward called him a pusy dog. He was after Easter. He struck the baby on the top of the head. RICHARDSON stated the death was caused by "plefussion" of the brain, caused by fracture from some hard missel. Inquest verdict: Inquest held 16 July 1871. Verdict: Came to her death through a fracture of the skull produced by a shell or other hard missel throwed by the hand of Wilson KORNEGA. Additional: There is a document dated 18 July 1871, which is an order to the sheriff stating that Wilson KORNEGA is being held in the county jail charged with murder, and that Wilson KORNEGA is a child of tender years, and ordering that the sheriff produce him at 5:00. He being produced, it was found that he is a child of about 9 years of age, and the witnesses are all 5 years and less, and the act was unintentional, Wilson KORNEGA is released.
