Testimony: SHIPP stated that he, RYAN, and WILLIAMS were at the RR near the bridge about nightfall, based on sheriff's information that suspicious persons would pass into the town at that time. They came across 2 negro men, who said they were Jack JONES and Jim ____, and said they were farm hands who worked for a colored man, and had been to John RICHARDSON's mill. They were civil, and stated they had seen a man further up the road. SHIPP and RYAN went to look for the man, leaving WILLIAMS with JONES and _____. RYAN doubled back toward, WILLIAMS, heard the gunshot, and found WILLIAMS dead. RYAN and SHIPP then considered themselves to be in danger, and went to town to report the facts. RYAN corroborated SHIPP's testimony. TISDALE stated upon hearing SHIPP's and RYAN's report, he went to the spot, found the body, and by the command of Major VAN HORN took it to the depot of the Atlantic and NC RR. Found a shot wound that entered below his left ear. Watch was missing. Verdict: Came to his death by gunshot wound inflicted by two negroe men called Jack JONES and Jim _____ while in custody of deceased.
