Craven County, NC - Capt. Love & Thomas Murley, 1787 ~~~~~~~~~~ Newbern, July 19 Extract of a letter from Wilmington dated July 12, 1787 The following melancholy casualties happened this week: On Monday the 9th, a Capt. Love of this place, left town by water in the afternoon, accompanied by Mr. Thomas Murley, merchant, a sailor and a negro. They went in a sailing boat, Capt. Love being ready to put to sea on an outward bound voyage. At the time he left town the weather appeared very unfavourable and a violent thunder-storm immediately succeeded. The boat being ballasted with stone suddenly filled and sunk. Mr. Murley, Capt. Love and the negro were drowned; the former being encumbered with clothing against the impending storm, and the latter having one of his feet entangled by a rope. The sailor made the shore with great difficulty. The bodies have been since found and interred.
