April 6, 1819, Edenton Gazette April 6, 1819 NEWBERN -- The following particulars relative to the late robbery of the Mail between this town and Wilmington, have been furnished us by THOMAS WILSON, ESQ., the Post-Master at this place, at whose instance the robber has been detected and will probably be brought to punishment. The mail from Wilmington to Newbern having arrived the last week without letters, and it being also understood that it had been received at the former place in a similar situation, ELIJAH GRONIO, a youth about 16 years old, who had carried the mail on this route but a few weeks, was suspected of having rifled its contents. He was according apprehended on Monday last, and having been examined before a Magistrate, was committed to the jail of this county. Since his confinement he has confessed that he robbed the mail four several times, and that he took in $194. Part of this, he states, was concealed by him in the hollow of a tree, which he promises to point out to the contractor, who left town on Thursday with the boy, accompanied by three of our citizens for the purpose of recovering the money and apprehending his accomplices, of whom he gave an account previous to their departure. The boy and his abettors, if apprehended, will probably have their trial at the next term of the United States District Court to be held at Raleigh.
