The Semi-Weekly Messenger (Wilmington NC) 4 January 1898
In Craven county, at the Green place, last Thursday, Mr Hardy Hudgins struck Mr
William Green on the back of the head with a gun. Green died of the injury that
night. The Newbern Journal says: "Both men are married, and had been drinking.
They helped make up a party of four to start on a hunting trip. Green is said to
have been a desperate character and when drunk was quite crazy. As the report
is, he was in Hudgins' yard and was cursing very badly. The family of Hudgins
were withing hearing and Hudgins ordered him to leave the place. Green refused
and upon continuing his bad language, Hudgins came upon him and struck him with
his gun.
