THELMA JONES CANNON McGOWAN

FRANKLIN - Thelma Cannon McGowan, 98, a retired elementary and kindergarten 
teacher, died Aug. 27, 2003 at the East Pavilion. Born in New Bern, N.C., she 
was a daughter of the late Lemuel H. and Cora Mallard Cannon and the widow of 
John Earle McGowan. Mrs. McGowan was a graduate of the Women’s College of the 
University of North Carolina in Greensboro and a member of the Emmanuel 
Episcopal Church.

  Survivors include her daughter, Florence McGowan Turner and husband Bob of 
West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Helen C. Mewborn of New Bern, N.C. and 
Margaret C. Motz of Fayetteville, N.C.; three grandchildren, John Turner of Los 
Alamos, N.M., Kathryn McClure of Winter Park, Fla. and Andrew Turner of Winston-
Salem, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Alex Turner, Andrew Turner and Cannon 
McClure; and several nieces and nephews.

   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Episcopal 
Church with the Rev. Edmund Pickup officiation. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in 
Cedar Grove Cemetery, New Bern. The family will receive friends today at 7 p.m. 
at the Village at Woods Edge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the 
Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 400 N. High St., Franklin, VA 23851. Wright Funeral 
Home has charge of arrangements.
